What to eat on a GLP-1: a diet guide from official sources
Updated Sep 30, 2026. Numbers in brackets link to the source each fact comes from.
There is no special “GLP-1 diet” on the drug labels. Wegovy, Zepbound and Foundayo are each approved for use together with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity [1] [2] [3]. Federal guidance and a 2025 expert advisory fill in the details: enough protein, plenty of fluids, and smaller meals while your stomach adjusts. This page describes what those sources say; your prescriber or a registered dietitian can fit it to you.
What the labels say about food and fluids
- Diet and activity are part of the approved use. All three weight-management labels pair the drug with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity [1] [2] [3].
- Wegovy tablets have food rules. Take the tablet on an empty stomach in the morning with up to 4 ounces of plain water [4], then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other pills [5].
- Foundayo does not. Its label says to take it once a day with or without food [6].
- Watch your fluids. The Zepbound label warns that dehydration from stomach side effects can lead to kidney injury, and tells patients to take care to avoid fluid loss [7].
The medicine works with the diet, not instead of it
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) says weight-management medicines do not replace healthy eating or physical activity and work best alongside a lifestyle program [8]. It adds that, on average, adults who take a prescription weight medicine as part of such a program lose 3% to 12% more of their starting weight after a year than people in the same program without the medicine [9].
What the 2025 expert advisory recommends
In 2025, four professional groups, among them The Obesity Society and the American Society for Nutrition, published a joint advisory on nutrition during GLP-1 treatment [10]. It notes that GLP-1 drugs cut body weight by 5% to 18% in trials, and lists the problems that come with that: stomach side effects, nutrient shortfalls from eating less, loss of muscle and bone, and weight regain when people stop [11]. Its priorities during treatment are managing stomach side effects, preventing nutrient deficiencies, and protecting muscle and bone through strength training and diet, with support from a registered dietitian where possible [12].
Specific points from the advisory:
- Nausea: smaller, more frequent meals, and avoiding fatty or very high-fiber foods in the first few days of treatment, can help [13].
- Protein: the general adult recommended daily allowance is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day [14], and higher targets of 1.2 to 1.6 g/kg/day have been proposed during active weight loss [15]. The advisory says it is unclear which body weight those targets should be based on for people with obesity [16].
- Constipation: enough fluids and fiber from food are encouraged, though other steps are often needed [17].
- Exercise: strength training at least 3 times a week plus at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week, to protect muscle and bone [18].
What the federal Dietary Guidelines say
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025-2030, apply to everyone, not only GLP-1 users. They center on real, whole, nutrient-dense foods [19]. Their daily targets include:
| Food group | Dietary Guidelines target |
|---|---|
| Protein | 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight per day, from animal and plant sources [20] |
| Vegetables | 3 servings a day [21] |
| Fruits | 2 servings a day [21] |
| Whole grains | 2 to 4 servings a day, with fewer refined carbohydrates [22] |
The guidelines also tell Americans to avoid highly processed food [23] and say added sugars are not recommended [24]. The protein range in the guidelines matches the higher range the expert advisory describes for active weight loss [15] [20].
Putting it together
A plate built from these sources has protein at each meal, vegetables and fruit, whole grains in place of refined ones, and water through the day, in portions small enough to sit well while your appetite is low. If you have kidney disease, diabetes, or a history of disordered eating, protein and calorie targets need to be set with your care team; do not change your medicine or your diet plan on your own. For side effects by drug, see GLP-1 side effects compared.
Clinic handouts often add lists of foods to avoid and products to take. The advisory covers some of them. It says alcohol may worsen nausea and acid reflux on GLP-1 treatment and should be kept to a minimum [25]. It advises against refined carbohydrates, sugar-sweetened drinks, red and processed meats, and most fast food, ultra-processed sweets and savory snacks [26]. On supplements, it says vitamin D, calcium, vitamin B12 or a multivitamin can be considered for nutrients a person is at risk of running short on, at suitable doses for that person [27], and it counts micronutrient or protein supplements, as needed, as part of care [28]. Spicy food comes up in Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy FAQ as a question to put to your provider: whether to avoid fatty, greasy or spicy foods [29].
